We’ve been hearing wonderful things about Lake Tahoe for years, so this summer we decided to pack up our dogs and make it a truly memorable road trip. The California side of Lake Tahoe is supposed to be super dog friendly, so we decided to spend all of our time there and skipped the Nevada side completely. As soon as Fish and Ares saw the suitcases, they knew it was time for an adventure and jumped in the backseat.
The drive from our house to South Lake Tahoe took about 8 1/2 hours, so we had a few stops along the way to let Fish and Ares stretch and burn some energy. As it turns out, the highways in the middle of Nevada are very quiet (we passed about 2 cars every 15 minutes) and much of them run through open range. We found so many great spots in the desert to let the dogs run off leash while we enjoyed the gorgeous desert scenery. Our first stop in South Lake Tahoe was to check out our hotel. We stayed at the Tahoe Beach Retreat and Lodge, which has no weight limit on dogs staying there and a nominal nightly pet fee. We were so excited to find a pet friendly hotel right on the beach!
After we settled in all four of us were hungry, so we decided to grab a bite at Izzy’s Burger Spa. They had a great shaded patio with picnic tables where we could bring our dogs. The burgers were fantastic and several folks stopped by our table to love on Fish and Ares. We spent the rest of the evening unpacking and relaxing at the hotel. With such a busy week ahead of us, catching up on some R&R seemed like the best plan. We did manage to catch the end of the sunset over the lake on our final walk of the night. It was absolutely beautiful!
